How to host and how to join
Play Sauerbraten through Neonlink. No mods, VPNs, port forwarding, or extra network configuration are needed. Just start the Sauerbraten server launcher, then link up with your friends.
Invite some friends and click Online to allow your friends to connect.
Find the installation directory for the game. It's usually located at C:\Program Files(x86)\Sauerbraten.
You might want to edit the server-init.cfg to set an admin password or change the server name, player limit etc.

Double click server.bat.
You will see a little Sauerbraten tray icon in your taskbar.
Wait for Neonlink to detect the server. This step should turn green
To join the server start the game and press T on your keyboard.
Then type and confirm with enter: /lanconnect
You can also use the server browser to find your server. Don't forget to check search LAN so your server will be listed as well. The server browser is hard to navigate though.
The other players should now follow the Neonlink player guide on their end to join your game.

You can stop the server by selecting "Exit" in the right click menu of the Sauerbraten tray icon.
Sauerbraten also supports the backquote key -> \ as a shortcut for opening a /` command prompt.
Wait for the host to allow connecting by starting the link.
Wait for the host to start the game server.
Connect to the host link by clicking Online
Start Sauerbraten and open the command prompt by pressing T on your keyboard and type:
/lanconnect Confirm by presing enter.

Questions before the first lobby
Do my friends need an account?
No. They install Neonlink, paste your invite code and join. Accounts are only needed for the paid tiers.
Do I have to open ports or set up a VPN?
No. Neonlink handles the networking on your PC; there is nothing to forward and nothing to configure on the router.
How many people can join?
Up to four players per lobby on the free tier. Overdrive lifts the ceiling; actual limits depend on the game and your hardware.
What if the game is modded?
That works, as long as everyone runs the same game version and the same mods or mod pack as the host.
